Social Networking

I have both a MySpace account and a FaceBook account. I use MySpace most often only because most of my friends and family have accounts with MySpace. I personally think FaceBook is more fun.

I've had a Ning account for a while, but I'm not really into it. The few networks that I joined are not very active.

I think social networking sites are a great place to promote PPLD services and events and to build an online community.

Find me on one of the social networking sites, and add me as a friend!

Howdy Friend!

You mentioned that you had not been fishing since moving here. One of our favs is Kinney Lake, about 80 miles east. They stock it with trout and when it ices off later this month it will be fun. Powerbait and a jig head is all you need.

I find myself avoiding MySpace, although "everyone" is on it [perhaps that is why]. The primary reason I don't enjoy it though, that the user experience is that it is so very juvenile. I suppose I just don't meet their target demographic, so I am sure MySpace execs aren't concerned about my experience.

Of the two major Social sites, Facebook is better suited to my tastes. I find the experience to be more or less enjoyable. I like that the user experience is customizable and the look is more polished and less like a sixth grader designed it. That being said, after some initial experimentation with the many (too many?) fun user applications offered up on Facebook, I find myself avoiding adding a new one every time a friend sends me a new invitation to do so. Think about it… how many ways can a person join in on a virtual food fight across the nation with a friend? I would much rather fly out and throw a real pie in your face and have a good laugh about it afterwards in the pub while I buy you a drink to make it up to you ~ in person.

I have a LinkedIn account. I don't know a lot of people who swear by it, but I do like the fact that LinkedIn is designed for adults not 15 year olds. I think it’s great for professionals. Still, with so many competitors out there for my online attention, I really haven't used LinkedIn to its full potential. In my opinion, LinkedIn is geared to be much more serious, much more oriented towards professional social / business networking, and that, frankly is not necessarily a bad thing. I really should do more to maintain my presence there more.

As for Ning sites, I have only used one. It's geared towards firefighters. I have had fun on it, I enjoy the interactions I have had on it, and will go back now and again.

Overall, I would say that I enjoy real life social interactions better than any experience that I have had on the social networks. I use the internet to find, share and exchange information and ideas, not just virtual high fives and graffiti. Say it's not so, but maybe that is just old fashioned thinking.
